'Really beautiful. Bonnie stuff.'
Karine Polwart
'Anna’s soft vocal style captivates from the first note, washing over the listener in
gentle, seductive waves. Backing and harmonies are carefully and effectively arranged,
with the lead vocal and harmonies matched and finely balanced.'
Folk Radio
'I think it’s really beautiful.'
Mike Harding, Radio 2 referring to Evensong (Valleys in the Flatlands)
After moving to the rural heart of the English midlands in 2007 Anna Elias and partner Harvey found themselves being increasingly influenced by the sounds and ethos of the local folk scene. Having played with separate projects and bands in the north they finally began a prolific song writing partnership.
The songs, which incorporate elements of traditional and contemporary folk, weave together themes of shadow and light but all linger in a sense of hope and possibility. The name for the debut record, ‘Valleys in the Flatlands’ reflects upon these themes and could be seen as a metaphor for the ‘valley’ times within our own lives. The songs are also strongly influenced by their surrounding landscapes, the changing seasons and the small iconic town of Southwell, dominated by its stunning Minster.
Released 18th September 2011
September 2011 will see the release of Anna Elias and the Forlorn Hope’s debut album, Valleys in the Flatlands, produced by the acclaimed folk producer, Ich Mowatt (Grammy nominated) who has recently worked with the likes of Ruth Notman and Tyde.
The album incorporates elements of traditional and contemporary folk whilst remaining unconstrained by any formula. The songs have been influenced by the surrounding landscape and the changing seasons in the small historic Minster town of Southwell.
